March 2024 - A Seasonal Diary

A seasonal diary of nature spots and little moments

Hello March

“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.”
― Charles Dickens

Mother's Day Hellebore Illustration

Well March, I approached with hopeful optimism that you might herald the start of better weather but as of yet you are still to deliver. I will forgive you though because you have brought with you the flowers to top the primrose leaves and the slightly longer days. For this I thank you. It has been pretty wet though, and other than both kids constantly being down with some bug or another we’ve had a pretty chilled month with not much to report. Oh me and The Farmer went to Edinburgh, 2 full days with no children, lots of haggis, coffee, a bit of wine and hours spent trawling old bookshops - absolutely no photos to show for it. It was really rather divine. Of course we spent most of the time talking about the 2 house monsters and wishing we had them with us to show them the sights. As we approach the end of the month I’m realising poor Toby hasn’t long left at home with me before nursery starts. I’m excited to be busy for a full 3 days a week and have no distractions or responsibility but also - I’m going to miss him!!

March In A List

A little list of a March well spent - or maybe just spent

  • Deer - 3 Deer spotted 3 times laid in the same place on the airfield. They looked super cosy relaxing in the edges of the game cover.

  • A male and female goldcrest spotted in the garden - Never have I seen one before so this felt like such a special moment. I had just come back from a soaking wet dog walk and was in rather dire spirits so thank you nature for that little boost.

  • Spotted a few bumblebees buzzing about in the first day of sunshine.

  • Spent a day at Sledmere House and Gardens and got to see the super cute little piggies which led to the creation of this illustration… Thanks Sledmere for wearing my boys out and for such a lovely day.

  • Spotted some violets in the woods at Burton Constable, Wood Anenomes were also spotted in the car on the way there.

  • A Crane or a Grus grus if you call it by it’s scientific name visited the airfield. My fabulous birder neighbour Andy got a photo of it and I couldn’t be more grateful to him. THANKS ANDY!

  • Skylarks singing up in the sky on mine and Toby’s walk so we sat (well he hung limp in the carrier completely zonked out) and I enjoyed the birds for 10 minutes - I got a wet bum. It was worth a wet bum.

What has March been like for you? Have you seen anything out in Nature that’s made you smile or just peeked your interest? I would love to know, tell me in the comments below...
