July 22 - A Seasonal Diary

An in-progress journal of nature for me this month

Saturday 2nd July - evening walk on the Devon south coast trail. Saw a white butterfly and red admiral. Honeysuckle is in full bloom in the hedgerow and common knapweed is now flowering beautifully by our Holiday cottage. A Red Tailed Bumblebee was visiting whilst me and Ted were sketching it. Found a large yellow wildflower that I need to identify.

Every dog walk the hedgerows and grass on the old airfield are teaming with Ringlets and large whites this month.

July 20th - A little owl flew across the road, about 10am in the day time. Felt a privilege to see.

21st July - the grass verges have lost their green and purple and taken on a more burnt brown hue. Lots of whites, painted ladies, ringlets, tortoiseshell and also saw an orange butterfly, possibly comma or fritillary.

26th July - some brave juvenile pied wagtails hopping boldly by the car as I pulled onto the old airfield.

27th July - noticed some devils bit scabious on the airfield, the chicory is also still flowering but the stems are turning purple.
